Turtle

A turtle is a reptile belonging to the order Testudines, a group distinguished by its protective shell, which is made of bone and covered by hard scales called scutes. Turtles have existed on Earth for more than 220 million years, making them one of the oldest groups of reptiles still living today. They are found on every continent except Antarctica and inhabit a wide range of environments, including oceans, rivers, lakes, wetlands, forests, and deserts. Turtles vary greatly in size and lifestyle, with sea turtles spending most of their lives in the ocean, freshwater turtles living in rivers and ponds, and tortoises inhabiting land. Depending on the species, turtles feed on plants, algae, insects, fish, jellyfish, crustaceans, and other small animals. Although they cannot leave their shells, the shell provides excellent protection from predators and is an essential part of their skeleton. Many turtle species are known for their long lifespans, with some living well over 100 years. Throughout history and across many cultures, turtles have symbolized wisdom, longevity, patience, resilience, and stability, making them enduring icons of the natural world and important ambassadors for wildlife conservation.
